Classical Cartoons

February 28, 2008 at 9:11 pm (Arts, Computers, Education, History, Movies)

Good things come from Down Under. A friend of mine recently showed me this educational website from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Focusing on Ancient Greece and Greek mythology, the site has games, activities, cartoons and resources aimed at kids ages 6-12. However, the videos themselves are at least as entertaining for adults as they are for kids! I especially liked their take on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, which casts Orpheus as an indie rocker, and the whole quest as a music video. Click on the link for “Storytime,” then on the link for “Orpheus and the underworld.” If you actually read this blog, then I’m pretty sure you won’t regret it. :o)

Comics Comics Comics

February 27, 2008 at 11:15 pm (Books, Comics, Family, Horror, Humor)

About a year ago, I went cold turkey and cut down the number of webcomics I was reading by about 80%. I was reading 20 or 30 a week, and could easily drop 45 minutes a night keeping up on all of them. And, frankly, if I’m going to blow 45 minutes a day, every day, I’d really rather I have something to show for it, like maybe MY DISSERTATION. It’s the regular updates that kill you, because you get sucked into the story, and then you have to go back every couple of days to see what else is new! So, I’ve worked really hard to keep my reading list lean, with only the choicest gems of comedy and adventure at my fingertips. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve Seen Stuff Like This Happen

February 27, 2008 at 10:42 pm (Humor, Travel)

And trust me, it isn’t pretty. But it sure is funny! One time on the excavation, our foreman came in with some tarps that he was setting up. After a minute or so, I could swear that I smelled smoke, but I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Our foreman insisted that it came from the fields being burned in the area (even though there weren’t any actively being burned). After another minute, one of my diggers smelled it, too. But the foreman still insisted that it came from the burning fields. Finally, I insisted on looking around, and quickly realized that the smoke was coming from him! He’d been smoking a cigarette outside the site before coming into my dig area, and had accidentally tossed his cigarette butt onto the tarp he was preparing. The but had then ignited the tarp in a few areas. It was easily put out, after which Massoum (the digger) and I spent the next two minutes rolling on the floor with laughter. It felt like one of those Looney Toons where Daffy or Bugs sets his tail on fire and doesn’t know it. Or, maybe you just needed to be there.

I’m Not the Only Crazy One

February 27, 2008 at 9:26 pm (Comics, Humor)

Maybe it’s people named Jo(h)n.  Maybe it’s cat lovers.  Whatever the reason, “Garfield Minus Garfield” (which, as the name might suggest, is the Garfield comic strip with Garfield himself removed) is genius.  Perhaps (dare I say it?) even funnier than the original???

Fatherhood Looms

February 21, 2008 at 11:19 am (Family)

Yep, I’m going to be a dad. Well, I guess I’m technically already a dad, judging by the picture:

You can click on it for a bigger image. This is about 12 weeks along, and our due date is September 4.  So, expect to see more about Junior (of as-yet-indetermined gender) in the coming months.  In the meantime, I’m just going to sit here and bask in the joy, and fear, of it all.

Valentine’s Day, Old-School…

February 14, 2008 at 6:14 pm (Books, Humor, Languages, Music)

Well, the wackos at America’s most dearly beloved publisher of academic material about the Ancient Near East decided this year to create a Valentine’s Day contest.  The rules were, you had to submit a Valentine’s Day message in one or more Ancient Near Eastern languages (including Greek), and they would judge them and award prizes to the best.  Well, you can see the results here, and it’s funny enough that pretty much any nerd will appreciate the results, and the commentary!

Oh, Crap. It’s Really Happening.

February 14, 2008 at 11:27 am (Movies)

You know, I knew it was happening, but I really didn’t believe it until now that I’ve actually seen the trailer.  That’s right, kids, it’s the new Indiana Jones trailer!!!!!  Talk about the best half-birthday present ever…

Creepy birds are appropriate for “Valentine’s Day,” right? Right?

February 14, 2008 at 11:21 am (Arts, Books, Horror, Humor, Movies)

Bryan over at Infocult clued me in to this particular gem:
Nothing says undying love to me like, well, undying love. Actually, now that I think about it, that undying love thing is a little creepy…
