Dissertation Update

January 31, 2007 at 10:47 pm (Dissertation, Education)

Well, I was pretty down about my dissertation today. Last night, I tried digging into the reed mats a little more, and I became rather convinced that they weren’t going to tell me how big the boats were, after all. So, I was in a crappy mood for much of the day. Since I knew I’d feel even worse if I didn’t do anything tonight (and since I go through these mood swings regularly), I forced myself to spend some time looking through texts on the CDLI, and I came up with an interesting idea. In some cases, we have the length and width of the reed mats. Why not just prepare a whole article/paper on the reed mats and see where it gets me? I’ll just pick up where Goetze left off (if he is, indeed, the last person to work on this) and try analyzing everything I can, including the size of the mats and their materials/construction. This could involve some chatting with Willeke, since reed basketry is her specialty, and could be a strong argument for her being on my committee. Plus, I know that I’ve found stuff that no one else has noticed, so I just put it all together. I can be a bean-counter, as it were; I like being a bean-counter. Read the rest of this entry »

To-Do List

January 31, 2007 at 10:41 pm (Uncategorized)

This is just a general list of tasks that I “need” to do in the near future not related to my dissertation.  As I do things, I’ll check them off, and I’ll add material as I think of it.

  • Link all of the scanned articles that I have to my Zotero database
  • Scan the rest of my articles, so that I can ditch the paper copies
  • Go through the papers on the right side of the desk
  • Install the incremental backup software on the computer
  • Deal with the boxes of old pictures, somehow
  • Go through my books and figure out which can be donated to the library
  • Make “mailboxes” for Heather and me, so that our mail is collected

Dissertation Thoughts

January 26, 2007 at 6:17 pm (Dissertation)

Okay, so it’s almost the end of January and I haven’t put together my proposal. I need to get on that! The proposal will essentially be an outline of the dissertation. I’ll start with a brief description, outline my chapter structure, then tell them the present state of the research and finally outline the next year and a half during which I plan on writing it. I’ll need to do more research, esp. in the literature area, but that’s okay, hopefully I can get by without too much of that. Read the rest of this entry »

Exploring the Unknown…

January 23, 2007 at 8:16 pm (Dissertation, Horror, Travel)

I was discussing my dissertation with Kate and Adam after class today, and Adam mentioned that he had a hymn to the Abzu that mentioned ma2-gur8. Naturally, I asked for a copy, but this caused Kate to ask my if my dissertation was cosmological in nature (that is, why my interest in the Abzu and the Kur?). I responded that my interest was, to an extent, in exploring the unknown, whether by sailing to a foreign land or by traveling between the worlds, and boats (esp. the divine barges) were an instrument of both of those. She then pointed out that, in Inanna and Ebih, the kurngala may be the same as the kurngala from GEN, which have the ability to travel between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and that I’ll want to look into that for the dissertation, as well.

Dissertating…

January 19, 2007 at 11:17 pm (Computers, Dissertation)

Oy vey, I’m a basket case. I haven’t really worked on my dissertation proposal for a week because (a) Heather and I headed up to Mammoth for the long weekend and (b) this was the second week of classes, and therefore the first week of my seminars, and I had a lot of homework to do. And tonight, I suffered the consequences: temporary depression stemming from my seeming inability to write a dissertation in Assyriology. I ended up all mopey, covered in a blanket, with my head in Heather’s lap while I felt sorry for myself. Luckily, she was thoughtful enough to scratch my head, which action led to immediate calmness and mental lucidity, wherein I devised a solution to my immediate problem. Read the rest of this entry »

Dissertation/Winter Quarter – making it work

January 11, 2007 at 8:35 pm (Computers, Dissertation, Education, Languages)

Well, after taking a hard look at my class load today, I realized that I was going to need some drastic measures to make everything work. As I see it, I have three main academic responsibilities this quarter: my dissertation proposal, my Akkadian and Sumerian classes, and my job with the UEE. But that’s a lot of work, and I’m notoriously bad (in my own mind, at least) at focusing and getting things done! So, how will I do it all? Read the rest of this entry »

2007: My Grand Plans

January 10, 2007 at 8:24 pm (Dissertation, Diving, Family)

So, I’ve decided to make a list of “plans” that I have for 2007, sort of New Year’s resolutions, if you will. I’m grouping them by priority, with 1 being the highest.

Priority 1 (I must do this!)

  1. Defend my dissertation by the end of March.
  2. Write my dissertation. I’m sick and tired of being in school and not having an income of my own. Read the rest of this entry »

Some neat ideas for the future

January 2, 2007 at 1:08 pm (Dissertation, Diving)

After my commitment the other day to making my dissertation my priority, I (of course) came up with a number of interesting things that I might like to do one day. Of course, now it’s all part of my “master plan.” That is, finish the diss/get a job in Educational Technology, then branch out into web publishing via blogging, podcasting/vodcasting and writing, and eventually create a career where I travel around the world and write cool stuff. Pretty detailed plan, don’ cha think? Read the rest of this entry »
